9th Cavalry
Lawton-Fort Sill Chapter
10 th Cavalry

Sergeant Brent Woods

Sergeant Brent Woods was one of 20 troopers of Company B, 9th Cavalry, who encountered Nana, an elderly but battle-wise Apache, and about 50 others from the Mescolero Agency in New Mexico Territory on August 19, 1881. Four troopers and their lieutenant were killed in the exchange of gunfire, which escalated when several civilians came on the scene and joined the cavalrymen, now under Woods' command. As the clash continued, Woods, "distinguished himself not alone as a brave and gallant fighter, but also by the heroic manner in which he went to succor of his wounded comrades and injured citizens." The Army bestowed the Medal of Honor on Woods, and years later he was honorably discharged to return to his home in Pulaski County, Ky. When he died in 1906, Woods was placed in an unmarked grave. Later, historians interested in Medal of Honor recipients located Woods' remains and had them reinterred with a proper headstone to recognize his heroism.
